9.2. BigPicture Doesn't Show in Ribbon, or Gets Error 53

Applies to: BigPicture 1.x or 7.x

I start BigPicture normally (double click on the desktop icon, or via the Start menu) and it seems that it loads. But I can't find a BigPicture tab on the Excel ribbon.

Or, when I try to launch BigPicture I get this error message:

Run-time error '53':
File not found: BigPicture1_x64.xll

or

Run-time error '53':
File not found: BigPicture1_x86.xll

The other tools in the DecisionTools Suite work just fine.

If our other tools have the same problem, please see @RISK Initializes, But No Tab Appears in Ribbon.

If the other tools launch successfully, and this problem is specific to BigPicture, did you have a beta of BigPicture or the DecisionTools Suite before installing the final release?  If you did not install a beta before the final release, please contact Palisade Technical Support for assistance.

If the problem affects only BigPicture, and you did have a beta version before installing the final release, then it's possible the BigPicture or DecisionTools Suite installer couldn't update some entries for BigPicture created in your System Registry by a previous install. To solve this issue, upgrade to the current version of BigPicture or the DecisionTools Suite. If you can't upgrade, or if you have upgraded and the problem remains, follow this procedure:

  1. Make sure you are logged in to Windows with a full administrator account.

  2. Click the Windows Start button and type regedit but don't press the Enter key. In the search results above, right-click Regedit or Regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator.

  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432Node\Palisade (in 32-bit Windows, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Palisade) and if necessary click the triangle or + sign to expand it.

  4. You will need to take control of BigPicture and each of its subkeys. To begin, click the triangle or + sign at the left of BigPicture to expand it, and repeat until you have expanded all subkeys.

  5. Right-click BigPicture and select Permissions.

    In Windows 8 and newer:

    1. In the Group or user names box, your Windows user name or group name should be showing. If it's not, click Add » Advanced » Find Now, pick your account or group name from the list, and click OK twice.
    2. Click once on your user name or group name under Group or user names. Then, under Permissions for that name, put a check mark under Allow on the Full Control row.
    3. Click the Advanced button to bring up the Advanced Security Settings dialog. If you see an Enable inheritance button near the bottom left, click it.
    4. Still on Advanced Security Settings, the owner is shown above the tabs. If it's you or SYSTEM, continue at step e below. Otherwise, click Change next to the name and select your account or group. If your account or group isn't in the list, click Advanced » Find Now, pick your account or group, and click OK twice.
    5. Save changes by clicking OK on the Advanced Security Settings dialog, and again on the Permissions dialog.
    6. Press the F5 key to refresh the display, and continue at step 6 below.

    In Windows 7 and older:

    1. In the Group or user names box, your Windows user name or group name should be showing. If it's not, click Add » Advanced » Find Now, pick your account or group name from the list, and click OK twice.
    2. Click once on your user name or group name under Group or user names. Then, under Permissions for that name, put a check mark under Allow on the Full Control row.
    3. Click the Advanced button to bring up the Advanced Security Settings dialog. Near the bottom, there should be a check mark for Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent. If necessary, click to set that option.
    4. Click the Owner tab. If the current owner is you or SYSTEM, continue at step e below. Otherwise, select your account or group. If your account or group isn't in the list, click Advanced » Find Now, pick your account or group, and click OK twice.
    5. Save changes by clicking OK on the Advanced Security Settings dialog, and again on the Permissions dialog.
    6. Press the F5 key to refresh the display.
  6. Right-click the first subkey under BigPicture and select Permissions. Repeat steps a through f to take control of that subkey. Continue until you have performed steps a through e on every subkey under BigPicture.

  7. If there is a 6.0 subkey under BigPicture, delete 6.0 and all of its subkeys.

Everything should now work as expected.
