7.30. Reproducing the Data from Spider Graphs

Applies to: @RISK 6.x–8.x

@RISK has a graphing option known as a spider graph that shows how various inputs affect a given output. How can I reproduce this data in Excel?

The attached workbook gives an example of how to do this. Here are the basic steps for the calculations that create the shape of the graph.

  1. Run the simulation.
  2. Use the RiskData function to extract the simulation samples. For more on this function, see Placing Iteration Data in Worksheet with RiskData().
  3. Use Excel sorting to order the samples.
  4. Calculate the percentiles for each input distribution and assign a bin number to each sample depending on the number of scenarios of the spider (i.e. 10). For more on bins, see Interpreting Change in Output Statistic in Tornado Graphs.
  5. Finally, calculate the average for each bin in the samples and assign it to the Change in Output column, which is the Y axis of the Spider Graph.
